The combination of Boston Whaler's 220 Dauntless and Mercury's supercharged Verado is a marriage made in boat heaven. The Dauntless hulls are the gold standard for centre console "bluewater" boats. Sublimely seaworthy with looks that are both purposeful and graceful, these beautiful craft always seemed to lose something when subjected to the peaky output and raucous howl of a two-stroke. No more. Motivated by a Verado 225's smooth, quiet and potent urge, the 220 Dauntless becomes a performer worthy of its elegant lines.
This transformation was apparent right from the first hole shot. Starting from the Verado's near-silent idle, the big Whaler just rose up and left, with minimal bow rise. Once we were on plane, cracking the throttle at any rpm provided an additional kick-in-the-pants burst of acceleration.The flexible output aided the boat's handling as well. Although the soft vee and reverse chines of the Accutrack hull cleave the water with athletic self assurance, the boat could also be powered around a turn with only minor changes in throttle position.
The sounds you live with while the boat is at speed are part of the experience, for good, and often, for bad. On our Dauntless, it was all good. Flat out, the Verado emits a pleasantly muted roar and Whaler's signature Unibond hull construction and soft-vee entry are exceptionally quiet running, regardless of sea conditions.
If one word could describe the Whaler's stance on the water, it would be "stability". At rest, the boat is as docksteady as a pontoon. You can walk anywhere in the hull and never feel anything close to a tippy sensation. Whether for preoccupied fishermen or spirited children, the safety factor is unmistakable. Underway, the blue water heritage becomes equally obvious. We didn't have any conditions that would challenge a hull designed for Atlantic rollers or the Gulf's chop but, our Dauntless weathered fast, quartering passes over a tour boat's wake as if it were magnetized to the river. Truly impressive.
As exemplary as the Dauntless' seagoing talents are, there are other factors that set it apart from the rest of the centre consoles. Flexibility was a key element in Whaler's mission statement for the Dauntless line. These boats can be rigged as a bare workhorse, dedicated fish hunter, family fun boat or any combination. Moreover, there are no compromises. Although the Dauntless comes with the requisite livewells, rod holders and tackle storage, for family use there is ample, safe seating - including a full width rear bench that has a fold-away seat back. A large bimini affords protection from the sun and the head, (equipped with a pump-out Port-A-Potty), is incorporated into the large centre console. It is more spacious and accommodating than heads on most day cruisers. There's even a removable ski pylon.
The boat we tested had been elaborately equipped and carefully set up for fishing. It was a beauty; the first time we had encountered a Dauntless with Whaler's stainless tubing T-top. This complex but handsome structure dominates the centre of the boat, but it doesn't get in the way. Instead, it offers a convenient, sturdy hand hold whatever the situation. Broad enough to provide plenty of shade, the strong upper section was home to both rod sockets and a radar antenna.
The T-top's tubing was complimented by a number of stainless hand holds and rails positioned around the boat. As with most of the high quality accessories, some were standard, some were optional in keeping with Whaler's goal of flexibility. This Whaler's best feature however,was the optional leaning post helm seat. In rough seas or while fishing, it provides a supportive stand-up position. But for long runs, the pilot and a passenger can sit on top of the wide cushion with their feet supported on flip-out rests.Whereas helm seating has always been a problem for centre consoles, the Dauntless leaning post brings us a successful solution.
