Description

Up for bid is a beautiful 12' cedar on oak lapstrake "Columbia" sailing dinghy designed by N.G. Herreshoff and built at The Apprencticeshop in Rockland, Maine and its trailer.
I purchased this boat several years ago from a seller in Illinois who purchased it from the original owner who, as I understand it, had it built at The Apprenticeshop in Rockland, Maine around 2010-11. I towed the boat and trailer back to Galveston, Texas from Central Illinois without any problems - the trailer tracks well at highway speeds. The trailer does not have intregal brakes, but is light enough to not require them. Trailer is wired for lights and registered in Texas.

The history of the design is told in this paragraph from the Herreshoff archives at Mystic, Conn. "In 1899 NathanaelHerreshoff designed a 14’ lifeboat for the America’s Cup defender Columbia. The design represented a departure from his previous small boat designs with its spoon bow and sprung keel. The model proved so successful that it became the basis for most of the dinghies built by Herreshoff between 1899 and 1935. By changing the scale, frame spacing, sheer heights, or a combination of these elements the Columbia lifeboat derived tenders became the standard issue dinghy for Herreshoff built yachts; an exquisite accoutrement to the larger vessel."
