Sailboat - 1971 Menemsha 24
1971 Menemsha 24
Description
"Tyche"is abeautiful 1971 Bob Baker design sailboatand one of only 26 built between the years 1970 and 74 by the Tallman Boat Company of Bristol, Massachusetts. Inspired by the Friendship Sloops indigenous to the northeast, the Menemsha 24 is a serious blue water boat that spent the first 31 years of her life sailing the waters of Buzzard's Bay and Martha's Vineyard. In 2004 she was sold and transferred to Chicago where she sailed for 2 seasonsthenput on the hard. I purchased her in the summer of 2008 and brought her to Weatherby Lake and spent the next year restoring her bright workand refitting her with a new Vire 7 hp 2 cycle engine (2016).
Tyche is named after the"Goddess of Good Fortune" of Greek Mythology. Since I've owned TycheI can honestly say that she has brought me and my family much good fortune. It will be difficult to see her go.
Will deliver in continental United States for $1.50/mile.
Tyche comes with a road worthy heavy duty trailer, electric brakes and controller and pulls behind my Suburban with ease. I have the original manuals, line drawings, extensive maintenance logs and upgrade detail, mast cradle, bumpers, lines, etc. The main sail has been professionally cleaned and is crisp and snow white. The Schaffer furler and head sail is in very good shape. The electric head and holding tank have been disabled due to the fact that we cannot pump out or overboard on an inland private lake. It can easily be enabled if so desired. The boat comes with many spare parts and specialty tools.
Tyche is kept in an underground cave, RV & boat storage, during the winter months, October to March. In the spring, I bring her to the house, lightly sand all the wood and apply two coats of Epiphanes Rapid Clear satin varnish, de-winterize the engine, apply 1 coat of VC17 (red) to the bottom and she is good to go for the season.
The bottom is in fairly good condition showing some flaking due to years of paint build up. There are no blisters and the hull is sound. The stuffing box is easily accessed from outside the boat when out of the water. With a shallow draft (2' 9" center board up, 4' 8" board down) she is easy to launch and retrieve.
The Vire 7 engine (pronounced VEE rah) is one of the most successful engines of its size, over 40,000 were built. Made in Finnland, they were very popular in Europe for their compact size, ease of maintenance and reliability. While the motor is no longer in production, parts are rather inexpensive and still available through Westerbeke among others. I bought mine from a rebuilder specialist in England.
