The JOIE DE VIVRE
For many years I have admired the early 1900’s pleasure yachts. My pleasure boat, Joie de Vivre was first conceived, than abandoned, when I was aboard Stan Laurel’s boat, Ida May, in 1953. in 2010 I got a hankering to build a trailerable cruising boat having some of the look of the Ida May and other classics. Years ago, I built a 16 foot day sailor using designer-builder Phil Bolger’s exquisite and simple plans. When I came upon Phil’s plans for the 30 ft. Tennesee #359, I realized that I could modify his design to to have some of the feeling of the Ida May and other yachts of that classic period. First, I built a 5 ft model of the boat hoping that my thirst for constructing a full scale boat would be assuaged. But it didn’t work. The result is what you see here. I spent about a year and a half in mildly obsessive effort in construction.
I moved a galley bulk head forward a foot and fit the curved galley roof with a convertible top so I can stand inside. I re-arranged two bulkheads aft to increase social space and accommodate a dining table. I modified the sides to give a feeling of flow to the boat. My son, Vaughan, and I took a winter field trip throughout the southwest, in part to collect some antique brass and bronze boat hardware,
This sale is for a 5+ year old custom built 30ft+ pleasure cruiser-pleasure boat and heavy-duty trailer.I WILL CONSIDER A FULL OR PARTIAL TRADE OF SOME KIND. I spent about a year and a half on construction of both the boat and the trailer--finished about 5 years ago. I am now 76 years old and live in the high desert of Southern California. I loved building it, but decided that I an not much interested in being in the water. The boat is made mostly from plywood. Other woods: Douglas fir, oak, pine, and others. The hull is sealed with Fiberglas, epoxy and paint to the gunnels. This boat has been on 5 day trips to lakes and the Colorado River. The canopy and covers are less than a year old. It can 'cozily' sleep four persons--two off the galley and two aft. The motor is a 2004 15hp Mercury, model 15E 4STR with two 6 gallon vintage steel fuel canisters. There are two anchors --one as shown and a stainless Danforth with 28” shank-- with plenty of chain and rope for each. Also, a pair of 10 ft+ oak emergency oars. Lots of storage--under birth and throughout. Galley has WWII two burner medical stove; vintage water pump, 15 gallon water tank; port-a potty, and food cooler. Half dozen life vests, two rubber bumpers. I can also include an unused spool of Manila rope, in case you may want to make boat bumpers yourself. The photos are part of the description.
