Description

Why is the Hallberg Rassy 35 such a legendary global cruiser?

If you have questions about the details of this particular Hallberg Rassy 35 or how to pay for it after the auction closes feel free to give us a call at 970 319 6408. We will also be happy to give you ideas and opinions about whether or not this amazing boat would be a good match for you with your own cruising dreams.

If you want to see a full tour of an actively cruising Hallberg Rassy 35 just do a google search for “Hallberg Rassy 35 Full Boat Tour.” The first several search results will be an unbiased and detailed review and tour of a beautiful sister-ship, boths pros and cons, with the Youtube channel couple White Spot Pirates.

This Classic Yacht is Located on a Mooring just outside of Annapolis MD and about 45 minutes from the Washington DC airport. Two months of mooring use is included with the sale. If you wish to keep the boat there longer Mooring rent is $200 per month.

These mid sized yachts are world renowed for their sailing performance and for their durability to handle intense ocean storms with style and grace. For a solo sailor or for a couple they are super easy to sail, with enough space below to store all the essentials for long passages and a very comfortable interior. Despite the spaciousness and the second bedroom aft, they aren’t too large and difficult to handle for a solo sailor or for a couple or small family to sail and dock easily.

Unlike much larger and more expensive vessels, when you get caught in a storm in a Hallberg Rassy 35 it is fairly easy to reduce sail area and still keep gliding along even through the big waves, unlike vessels with much higher aspect rigs that can easily leave a sailor feeling overwhelmed and bieng hard to reduce sail area in a gale. They are the perfect combo of big enough, and certainly tough enough, to circle the globe, but still easy and comfortable to sail even by older sailors who no longer have the fortitude and sheer strength of younger sailors.

The back bedroom offers plenty of extra space, either serving as a gear garage for a cruising couple, or as a second bedroom when you have guests on board. And with its own private entrance to the cockpit two couples can cruise together on this Rassy with relative privacy or give the grandkids their own cabin when they visit.

The cockpit is deep down with high sides offering exceedingly good protection from the wind and weather during storm sailing and also this gives a very deep sense of safety and comfort when heeled over on a beam reach or close hauled.

Best of all is the solid fiberglass and glass pilothouse which allows a full 360 degree view of the bow and rig but with amazing comfort and protection from the elements. This pilothouse was the original feature which made the Rassy 35 such a sought after and world famous cruising sailboat when it was first launched.

Finally the full molded shoal draft keel does an amazing job making the boat absolutely tough-as-nails and still a very fast cruiser with amazing directional stability. You can lock the steering without even putting the boat on autopilot and go down to make a sandwich or use the bathroom and come back to the cockpit and find it still holding course on a steady bearing. Fin keel vessels are fragile, flimsy and squirrely as hell by comparison. And because of the shallow draft you can pull up close to shore in the shallow anchorages and get further into the protection of the wind shadow of the shore and anchor in water that is much shallower than where deeper fin keel or deep full-keel vessels can navigate.

Like a classic Rolls Royce or Bently, quality never goes out of style. Hallberg Rassy is among the most elite brands of global blue water cruising sailboats right along side the other ultra-premium brands Nautor’s Swans, Oyster, Cabo Rico, Tayana and Island Packet. The Hallberg Rassy 35 was the pen-ultimate classic global cruising yacht which established the brand as a global leader in the Owner/Cruiser world of yachts, large enough and rugged enough to circle the globe but not so extremely large or costly that they require a hired crew to sail them.

If you look on the Yachtworld site, which is the listing service for all the premium yacht brokers globally, and if you put into your search bar Hallberg Rassy between 31 ft and 38 ft your global search will reveal the following models available on the re-sale yacht market at the following locations with priced converted to US dollars:

I AM AN EMERGENCY RESPONDER, SEARCH & RESCUE VOLUNTEER & ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF WHO WAS A FEMA FLOOD VICTIM IN GREAT COLORADO FLOOD OF 2013.

DURING THAT FLOOD I WAS SAVING LIVES & RISKING MY OWN CARRYING PEOPLE FROM ROOFTOPS THROUGH RAGING WATER AS WE WERE WATCHING ENTIRE HOUSES FLOATING DOWN STREAM, JUST AS WHAT HAPPENED ON THE 4TH OF JULY IN TEXAS. I KNOW THE FORCE OF THAT WATER AND THE FEAR OF IT. AND I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE ANGUISH OF THE MANY FAMILIES WHO ARE STILL AWAITING THE CERTAIN KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT BECAME OF THE 173 PEOPLE WHO REMAIN MISSING AND UN-ACCOUNTED FOR AS I WRITE THIS. IT IS UNLIKELY THAT ANY OF THEM WILL STILL BE FOUND ALIVE, BUT FOR THEIR FAMILIES SENSE OF CLOSURE IT IS VITAL THAT WE CAN SOLVE THE MYSTERY OF WHAT HAPPENED TO THEIR LOVED ONES AND GIVE THEM THE ABILITY TO LAY THEIR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES TO PEACE PROPERLY.

I AM SO EMOTIONALLY AFFECTED BY THE DEVASTATION IN TEXAS HILL COUNTRY WHERE I LIVED ON THE GUADALUPE RIVER AS A TEENAGER THAT I CANNOT STAND BY & ONLY WATCH THE HORROR, SUFFERING & DEVASTATION ON THE NEWS. I AM ORGANIZING A GROUP OF SEARCH & RESCUE CHAINSAW & WINDLASS CREWS TO HELP CLEAN UP & RECOVER LOST VICTIMS IN THE AFTERMATH OF THIS DISASTER THAT KILLED NEARLY 300, MANY OF THEM INNOCENT CHILDREN. THE PROBLEM IS I AM A FIRE FIGHTER & I HAVE NO FUNDS IN SAVINGS OR RETIREMENT TO PAY FOR OUR RECOVERY MISSION SO I AM HAVING TO SELL THIS AMAZING BOAT AT NO RESERVE AUCTION TO PAY FOR THE EXPENSES OF OUR SEARCH AND RESCUE CREWS TO TRAVEL TO TEXAS AND WORK AS VOLUNTEER RESCUE RESPONDERS. I WILL ALSO HAPPILY ACCEPT DONATIONS TO HELP FUND OUR EFFORTS ALTHOUGH WE ARE NOT AN OFFICIAL 501C-3 ORGANIZATION SO DONATIONS ARE NOT TAX EXEMPT Call 970 319 6408 IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP OR IF YOU WISH TO JOIN OUR EFFORTS AS AN EMERGENCY RESPONDER VOLUNTEER. IN THE PAST I HAVE ORGANIZED AND PARTICIPATED IN CLEAN UP FOR THE NORTHRIDGE EARTHQUAKE, MID-WEST TORNADOES, WILD FIRES, HURRICANES KATRINA, SANDY, IRMA, HARVEY AND OTHERS.

ONCE OUR EFFORTS ON THE GROUND IN THE TEXAS HILL COUNTRY ARE WRAPPED UP I INTEND TO ORGANIZE A LOBBYING EFFORT TO HELP SUPPORT FUTURE FEMA EMERGENCY RESPONSE FUNDING WHICH HAS BEEN CUT DRASTICALLY BY THE POLITICIANS IN WASHINGTON D.C. AND TO HELP SECURE GOVERNMENT FUNDING FOR BETTER EMERGENCY WARNING SYSTEMS SO THAT PEOPLE'S LIVES ARE SAVED IN FUTURE DISASTERS.

This is a long list but it reveals two things. (1) These boats transit the world owned by serious international sailors. Only seven on this list are located in the United States. The rest are located mostly in Europe and various island locations. (2) They aren’t cheap. Most are maintained by relatively wealthy people and they rarely, if ever, go on the market at price point a normal working person can afford without taking out a bank loan.

Some project yachts aren’t worth the effort to restore them, but obviously if you can ever find a Hallberg Rassy between 31 to 38 ft long on a deal, that is one crazy good opportunity to invest some sweat equity in restoring a classic yacht.

If you want to cruise the world, obtaining a Hallberg Rassy on a deal is the dream of a lifetime. If you are a boat restoration professional, finding one that has been damaged in a hurricane or somehow left neglected and available at a deep discount is always a restoration you can make good money on to buy it, restore it and flip it.

In restored condition you will always be able to find a buyer, typically at a price that more than justifies the cost and effort of the restoration. The only true classic “Rasmus” sistership on this list is quite a deal at a mere $49,000. All the others, even 34 and 35 ft Rassy’s only a few years newer, are selling for $80K to $150K.

This is what you get when you type into Google, “Why is Hallberg Rassy considered the ultimate cruising sailboat.” Its’ True:

Hallberg-Rassy sailboats are highly regarded as the ultimate cruising sailboats due to their exceptional build quality, robust construction, and focus on comfort and safety for long-distance passagemaking. They are known for their seaworthiness, reliability, and ability to handle challenging conditions, making them a top choice for serious bluewater cruisers.

Here's a more detailed look at why they are so well-regarded:

  • Uncompromising Build Quality:

Hallberg-Rassy yachts are built to a very high standard, using premium materials and meticulous construction techniques. This dedication to quality ensures longevity and reliability, which are crucial for offshore sailing.

  • Seaworthiness and Safety:

Hallberg-Rassy sailboats are designed to be safe and capable in a wide range of sea conditions. Their robust hulls, well-protected cockpits, and thoughtful deck layouts contribute to a secure and comfortable sailing experience, even in rough weather.

  • Comfortable and Spacious Interiors:

Despite their focus on performance, Hallberg-Rassy interiors are designed for comfort and livability, with ample space and thoughtful layouts for extended cruising. The emphasis on natural light and well-appointed living spaces enhances the onboard experience.

  • Long-Distance Cruising Capability:

Hallberg-Rassy yachts are built to handle long offshore passages, with many models designed specifically for bluewater cruising. Their range, fuel capacity, and systems are all geared towards extended voyages.

  • German Frers Design:

Many Hallberg-Rassy models feature designs by the renowned naval architect German Frers, known for creating yachts that are both fast and comfortable.

  • Resale Value:

Due to their reputation for quality and durability, Hallberg-Rassy yachts tend to hold their value well, making them a sound investment for serious sailors.

  • Swedish Craftsmanship:

The brand's Swedish heritage is reflected in the attention to detail and the overall quality of the build.

In essence, Hallberg-Rassy sailboats offer a compelling combination of performance, safety, comfort, and reliability, making them a top choice for those seeking the ultimate bluewater cruising experience.

Now my own words: The HALLBERG RASSY Rasmus 35 was a revolutionary mid-sized cruising yacht that pioneered round-the-world and long-distance blue water cruising for a generation. The enclosed pilothouse became a standard which many other lesser brands of yachts and some super-luxury brands like Oyster and Nautor’s Swans imitated on the majority of their new vessels every year since the Rasmus was introduced. Even at full price, ready to sail versions of the Rasmus 35 are typically priced between $40,000 to $75,000. You get what you pay for, and Rassy’s will always be a premium brand, but even at their price point they are considered some of the best value blue water yachts for middle class cruisers who don’t have a million dollars to spend on a new multi-hull, just because they are so durable and they sail so well.

There is a simple reason why these amazing boats have kept their value and distinguished status over the decades. It can be summed up in a single phrase, “How much is your life worth?”

These boats are some of the safest and most comfortable vessels ever made, and from that perspective they even are still more seaworthy 40 years later than many of today’s yachts which may have many more modern amenities and slightly more spacious interiors but which by comparison are much more fragile creations that are much more likely to have structural issues during extreme weather events or if they ever run aground on a Caribbean coral head.

Simply put, a true classic is still a true classic, not simply because classic lines never go out of style but also because these were some of the safest and most sturdily constructed blue water vessels ever built.

If you are an experienced sailor who has always hoped to someday own a Halberg Rassy or if you are a beginner who wants to know that your vessel itself will help keep you safe while you are learning how to be safe on the open ocean, this could be your opportunity to achieve one of these amazing blue water cruisers at far below the normal price.

This one had a surveyed value of $42,000, and $124,000 replacement value, before the prior owner began a complete upgrade and re-fit which they never completed due to unfortunate personal life events. There have already spent over $20,000 in upgrades made to the vessel including a brand new diesel motor installed and brand new self tailing winches, solar panels and new VHF radio. However, because of the several unfinished tasks this amazing yacht is available on a true no reserve auction basis with a crazy low opening bid price.

It is a project boat but the best sort of project boat because it just needs to be re-assembled like putting together a life size Testor model. The teak interior and cushions are still in very good condition. The boat stays very dry inside. It just is in a state of “Some Assembly Required.” But if you have the skills necessary to remodel a land house kitchen or bathroom then you can easily save $20,000 on the purchase price just by investing a number of weekends of sweat equity on the front end and keep the extra money you save on the purchase price to spend on restaurant meals while you are cruising the far off oceans and islands.

Terms of the Auction:

Like a dealer only car auction, the terms for participating in this no reserve auction are that you need to be ready to make a cash payment within 24 hours.

This no reserve Ebay auction is your opportunity to get a deal of a lifetime on this Hallberg Rassy in need of some upgrades and re-commissioning.

Your bid is a legally binding contract to purchase this amazing vessel. If you want to perform a physical inspection prior to bidding in order to insure that you know exactly what you are getting, the boat is available for physical inspection, but since it is on a mooring you will need to bring a dinghy or kayak to get out to the boat. The mooring is available if you wish to keep the boat at its current location. Two months of mooring rental are included in the purchase price. Beyond that mooring cost is $200 per month.

What Does This Amazing Classic Yacht need in order to be ready to sail?

Well, technically it could be “sailed” as it floats right now, but there are a number of small projects to complete the restoration. The most important is that the steering wheel and motor controls and throttle assembly need to be reconnected. When the motor was replaced with the brand new three cylinder Kubota diesel engine and the old motor was removed the steering pedestal was removed and controls were removed. The motor is installed again and the pedestal is back in place but the shifter and throttle and hydraulic steering need to be reconnected. Hopefully this is just a single afternoon project. All the parts seem to be there. In the meantime the boat can be steered because it has a redundant tiller steering system. But to steer it in its current condition you would need to use the tiller steering.

Other projects that need to be completed are to re-install the batteries and fix a few sections of the toe rail gunwale cap. There are approximately two eight foot sections of top rail missing. You could either buy used pieces of gunwale cap from a used marine store like Bacon Sails which is a large resale sailing equipment shop only a few miles away in Annapolis, or you could cut and shape new pieces out of oak, or other appropriate wood and stain them and install them. Also the interior kitchen drawers were being re-built by the previous owner, but he did kind of a weird job on them and they need some cabinetmaking skills applied to them. A few pieces of teak trim need to be reinstalled around the battery locker. The bathroom toilet needs to be connected to the new holding tank which was already installed previously. The underside of the pilothouse roof needs to be painted. Some of the teak on deck and in the cockpit also needs sanding and varnish. And the entire deck would likely benefit from being painted with topsides white paint as it is starting to show its age. The companionway boards need the small guide board screwed back on to hold them in place. The decks themselves are very solid. The hull is extremely sound and in good condition other than the age of the fading paint. The bottom was sanded and painted with new anti-fouling paint only a season ago and so it is pretty good condition and barnacle free but does have a bit of algae clinging to the bottom at the waterline. There may be other small projects we did not notice when we were conducting our inspection and taking photos, but these are all of the projects we were able to identify. A few weekends of work should bring the boat back to fairly decent condition. The sails are in fair used condition, genoa and main sail, but in bags in the aft cabin. There is a bimini frame but no canvas for it, so if you want a bimini you will need to buy a canvas top.

THE WOODEN BOAT ERA

In our modern time when boat building has not been spared series building or mass production, it is good to know that the Hallberg-Rassy yard existed in the days when boat building still meant wood and individual boats. In view of this we have specialized, from the earliest days, in comfortable sailing boats suitable for longer voyages. The company history started with Harry Hallberg back in 1943.

FACEBOOK SINCE EARLY 2011

Hallberg-Rassy started itsFacebook page early 2011. The account is very active and probably the most "liked" Facebook page in the yachting industry.

HARRY HALLBERG

What today is called Hallberg-Rassy Varvs ABwas originally two yards.

Harry Hallberg, who lived between 1914 and 1997, commenced his boatbuilding career as a boy of 14, constructing boats made of wood.In 1943 he opened his own yard at Kungsvikenon the island of Orust in Sweden.

At first, he built his wooden boats more or less by instinct.Different possibilities were discussed with the customer and solutions pointed out. Blueprints hardly existed at all. It was said that:"Someone who cannot build a boat without drawings cannot call himself a real boat builder".

The first boat to be built in a series was the Folkboat. He also had good success with Kungskryssaren, The King’s Cruiser, not to be confused with the Finnish King’s Cruiser, which has nothing at all to do with Hallberg-Rassy. The Kungskryssaren was constructed in the mid-50’s. Both the Folkboat and Kungskryssaren was also built by other yards.

Harry Hallberg’s most distinguished contribution was his understanding of the advantages of using GRP and to build boats in a series. In 1963 he was one of the pioneers in serial production of sailboats using GRP. He was the first successful builder of GRP hulls with wooden superstructure in a series. HisP-28 was a great accomplishment and in many aspects a forerunner. Hallberg early had export success, with most of the 100 first P-28 sold the the USA.

CHRISTOPH RASSY

Christoph Rassy lived between 1934 and 2021 and was brought up in Bavaria in the south of Germany by a lake named Starnberger See. As a young guy, he in his spare time built models of boats and also real boats. He wanted to learn more about boats and became an apprentice at a small yard for wooden boats in southern Germany.

Soon he wanted to build and sail larger and finer boats and wanted to live by the sea. He thought that Sweden, a large country with lots of water, was bound to build large and splendid boats. Consequently, he wrote to many Swedish boatyards, requesting work. One yard wrote that they would welcome him, and in 1960 Christoph moved empty-handed and with a bicycle as his only possession to Notesund, Sweden to build boats. During the day he built boats for a boatyard that has now been out of business for many years.

The shed where it all started, both for Mr Hallberg and for Mr Rassy, although they actually never worked together as partners

THE KUNGSVIKEN YARD

To stretch his cash flow young Mr Rassy built boats for himself in his spare time. He raced these boats, won, and sold them at a profit.

Soon Christoph Rassy wanted to strike out on his own. As luck had it, this coincided with a leading boat builder's change of premises. This boat builder was Harry Hallberg. In the mid-60’s the yard at Kungsvikenhad become too small for Mr Hallberg and he built new premises inEllos, 10 kilometres to the southwest on the island of Orust.

When Christoph Rassy started his own business he bought the old Hallberg yard in Kungsviken.

The two first Hallberg-Rassy Rasmus 35 were built entirely of mahogany

HARRY HALLBERG AND CHRISTOPH RASSY WERE COMPETITORS 1965-1972

In the years of 1965 to 1972, Harry Hallberg and Christoph Rassy were competitors. At first, Christoph Rassy built boats on a one-off basis.

The first boat that became part of a series was the "Rasmus 35", designed in 1966 by the then leading Swedish designer of elegant yachts,Olle Enderlein. The first two were built entirely in mahogany and took one year each to construct. This boat was in many ways ahead of its time. It was a pioneer long distance cruiser with a powerful engine and a centre cockpit protected by a windshield. This is a design that has remained with the Hallberg-Rassy yachts to this day. When the Rasmus was presented many eye-brows were raised. Some thought that the boat was much too large. In those days 35 feet was regarded as an enormous boat size. In addition, it was a sailing boat with a windshield. This was a combination never seen before. Today it is taken for granted on a good cruising boat.

At the same time Harry Hallberg built his boats in Ellös. Smart, attractive boats at a reasonable price, thanks to serial production and GRP hulls.

TWO YARDS BECAME ONE: HALLBERG-RASSY

Harry Hallberg retired in 1972.Again, fate intervened; Christoph Rassy was looking for larger premises.Ellös now produced the "Mistral 33" featuring a superstructure of mahogany, the 1/2 ton "Mistress 32", the best-selling "P-28" and the little yellow 24 ft "Misil II", all designed by Olle Enderlein, with the exception of theP-28which was designed by Harry Hallberg.

In 1972 the Rassy yard in Kungsviken purchased Harry Hallberg’s yard in Ellös. As the Hallberg brand was by far the most well-known with its four designs and the Rassy yard only had the Rasmus; the new company was named Hallberg-Rassy.

Harry Hallberg and Christoph Rassy, however, have never been partners.

As a matter of curiosity, we like to tell about a prospective boat-buyer, who in 1972 was torn between buying a Mistral 33 from the Hallberg yard or a Rasmus 35 from the Rassy yard. The Rasmus had centre cockpit and the Mistral had aft cockpit. The prospect asked a salesman at Hallberg’s why he should choose the Mistral: "- As the boat has an aft cockpit you do not risk water splashing into an aft-cabin"was the answer. The prospective buyer later went to the Rassy yard to look at the Rasmus. The following discussion took place:

Prospective buyer to Mr Rassy:

  • Why not a boat with an aft cockpit, so you do not get water splashing into the aft cabin?

  • Who recommends that? Mr Rassy asked.

  • The people at Hallberg’s at Ellös.

  • They will never say that again.

  • Why not?

  • Ibought the Hallberg yard this morning.

A Rasmus was ordered. This boat has the same happy owner to this day. And by the way; the water does not splash into the aft-cabin!

The Hallberg-Rassy Monsun 31, 904 built 1974-1982THE BESTSELLER - THE MONSUN 31

The first new design under the name of Hallberg-Rassy was theMonsun 31, which was created in 1973 and launched 1974.The boat proved a great success, and 904 were built up to 1982, the highest number of units built of any kind of Hallberg-Rassy to this date.

To meet the demand the area of the yard was doubled in 1975.

WEBSITE INTRODUCED 1996

When the Hallberg-Rassy web site got online back in 1996, it was one of the very first web sites for any boatbuilder in Europe. Already then it was unusually extensive. This was even before Google existed!

FIRST GRP BOAT IN A MUSEUM A HALLBERG-RASSY

In 1996 theHallberg Rassy Monsun 31"Golden Lady" retired into a museum, after three and a half circumnavigations. The Swedish sailor Kurt Björklunddonated his boat to the maritimemuseum in Råå in southern Sweden. Kurt Björklund is the first owner and took delivery of this boat here in Ellös 1974. Kurt knew that he wanted to do some serious sailing, but could never have imagined how far he would travel. In 1983 Kurt retired from work and went on his first solo circumnavigation. The second one included the rounding of Cape Horn.-I could have sold the boat for some SEK 300 000 But I could not stand the idea of not knowing where the boat was and how she was doing. I prefer sacrificing the money and have peace in my mind, Kurt said, who lived between 1921 and 2006.

Olle Enderlein 1917 - 1993 www.oeyc.org

Olle Enderlein was born at Norrköping in 1917. His relatives were Finnish, but his ancestors descended from Sachsen in Germany. His father was the chief Customs´ Inspector in Norrköping and it was also here that he grew up. The family had a summer house on an island in Bråviken (a bay close to Norrköping) and it was there that Olle Enderlein at an early age got in contact with the archipelago, the sea and boat life After high school, he trained as an engineer. For Olle Enderlein, boat designing was a hobby that gradually became his profession. When he was 27 years old he left his position at Archimedes engine factory in Gothenburg to try to become a professional boat designer. According to him, ”he stopped working”. Boat designing was much more like a way of life than an occupation. He was a reserved person and he rarely made public statements. His designs were his means of communication. He was as much an artist as he was a constructor. He was a born aesthete. Enderlein kept and developed an interest in boats and boat construction for his whole life and he himself designed a couple of hundred different boat models – an unbeatable record. The blueprint archives are comprised of a hundred or so designs. The inventory covers a wide range – from small canoes and skiffs up to the Hallberg-Rassy boats HR 35 ”Rasmus”, HR 352, 38 and 382, the ketch HR 41 together with the HR 42, 45 and 49. In the register, spanning these designs, is a whole row of perhaps his most loved designs. Among these, of course, belong the ”OE-boats” (OE 32, OE 36 and others) but also the motor sailers Monsun 31 and Najad 34 as well as the sailing boats Misil, Mistral, HR 26, HR 312, Nord 80, Shipman 28, Mistress 32 and several others. Many of these boats are still sailing today. The Royal Swedish Yacht Club and yacht-racing Mankind has sailed since the beginning of time. They have sailed both to earn a living and for pleasure. Even the specialised form of pleasure sailing called yacht racing is an old sport. The sport began in England in the 18th century and eventually came to Sweden, where The Swedish Yacht Club was established in 1830. When King Oscar II joined the association, the name was changed to The Royal Swedish Yacht Club, KSSS, and adopted the three-tailed flag. From then until the beginning of the 20th century, the boat sport in Sweden was largely made up course sailing in protected waters and the boats seen in those days were designed to perform well in these competitions. That meant that these boats were often fast, but at the same time fragile, uncomfortable, with a deep draught and not particularly seaworthy. They were not suitable for any other purpose other than yacht racing, i.e. short duration sailing in well known and protected waters. (Ocean racing was at that time still an untried type of competition.) The Swedish Cruising Club In order to correct the imbalance in the development of designs, in 1923 The Swedish Cruising Club was established, which instead wanted promote long distance sailing and what was called ”cruising”. This demanded another type of boat – more sea-worthy and comfort able for longer regular sailing trips with ”ordinary” people as crew, i.e. ”family boats”. Olle Enderlein was six years old when The Swedish Cruising Club was established. At this age he was already passionate about boats and consequently he found himself at the starting point in the development of a whole new way of thinking about boats which would soon take off and quickly advance. He came to make a lasting contribution to that development. At an early stage, Yacht Racing had drawn up different match rules for different types of boats so that they would be able to compete with each other in a fair and just way. In addition, RORC (Royal Ocean Racing Club) regulations had been drawn up earlier and remained unchanged from 1931 until 1970. They were replaced by the IOR (International Offshore Rules) regulations. These were worked out by a committee with support from, among others, Olle Enderlein. The first ocean yacht race was arranged in the USA around the turn of the century. It was much later, in the1920’s, that the big ocean yacht races – like the Fastnet Race – began. Ocean yacht racing came to Sweden in the 1930’s. KSSS represented them, while The Cruising Club was mostly concerned with long distance sailing. But there was no antagonism between the two clubs. One reason for that was, among others, that the Swedes were not particularly interested in extreme racing yachts. Instead, they wanted seaworthy family boats of a moderate size which could also be used for yacht racing. KSSS and The Cruising Club were therefore jointly interested in developing such boats. Olle Enderlein came to play an important role in this development work. From hobby designer to professional constructor Enderlein’s ideas had since the 1940’s influenced the public perception about how boats should be designed. In 1944 Enderlein won – in a competition against 18 other constructors – first prize in The Cruising Club’s competition with a boat that could be built with three different stern designs. The design was called “Gudingen” (Swedish for the the male eider duck) and the first prize was 900 Swedish crowns (about 100 euro). Enderlein even took a couple of honourable third placings in English design competitions and he realised that the hobby of designing would perhaps lead to a working trade. In 1947 he was convinced that this would be the case. Then he won the first prize in the magazine Yachting World’s big international design contest, in competition with 48 established constructors from the major sailing countries. The winning design was a 35 foot long distance sailing boat. ”A beautiful boat and a superb sailer” summed up the competition’s judges. As well as the honour, Enderlein received £50 in prize money. In the 1950’s Enderlein became increasingly noticed as a designer in the Swedish and German newspapers and magazines and he became in great demand as a constructor. In 1955 he was awarded the KSSS´ Gold Medal and in 1961 The Cruising Club’s Tore Herlin Medal for his boat designs. The ideal long distance boat At the end of the 1960’s The Swedish Cruising Club discussed how an ideal long distance boat should be designed. Few of the designing customs of the day met the criteria they wanted from such a boat. The Cruising Club therefore turned to three designers to gather their knowledge for further discussions. One of these three was Olle Enderlein. The OE-boats formed some of the boat models that Enderlein designed in the 1960’s and later. They are each different but they all have been influenced by the discussions that The Cruising Club initiated in the 1960’s.
