Description
2001 WELLCRAFT MARINE 29' SCARAB
Think of every performance boat you own as a stepping stone to your next performance boat. Your first river hot rod leads you to your first sportboat, your first sportboat leads to your first offshore boat. The problem — if it can be called a problem — is that if your first offshore boat is a 29 Scarab, you might not take the next step. The boat is that good.
Having logged more than a few hours in a Scarab 29, I know this well. True, in big water it's no replacement for a 38- or 42-footer, but the 29-foot-5-inch-long, 7-foot-6-inch-wide model handles the rough stuff as well as anything in in its class. Riding on a 23-degree deep-V hull, the boat delivers crisp handling and, with the right power package, will run more than 70 mph.
Appropriately outfitted for the offshore breed, the 29 Scarab comes standard with twin bolsters for the driver and co-pilot and a deep wraparound rear bench. The helm includes full Gaffrig instrumentation and Mercury Zero Effort throttles and shifters. Also appropriate for the breed, the cabin is straightforward and functional with facing lounges, a V-berth and precious little to break.
The entire boat is hand-laid, and its stringer system is fully encapsulated in fiberglass. For extra brawn, strakes are micro-balloon-filled. In single- or twin-engine configurations, motors are installed on offshore-style mounts and thru-bolted to the stringers.
Engine options run the range of the MerCruiser and Volvo Penta product lines. On the MerCruiser side, you can go from the 310-hp 7.4L to the 470-hp HP500EFI in a single-motor application, or you can opt for twin 300-hp 350 Magnums. Single engine offerings from Volvo Penta range from the 310-hp GI SX to the 560-hp DPX 600. In twins, you can get a pair of 280-hp Volvo Penta 5.7 GSI motors with either single-propeller SX or twin-propeller DP drives.
Dry weight of the 29 Scarab is 6,300 pounds. Fuel capacity is 100 gallons.
