1981 Oday 34 ft – Racer / Cruiser Sailboat
It’s time to downsize. We moved from where we were 1.5 hours from our boat to only 5 mins, now I want to go back to what I really like - just me and the tiller, daysailer.
Our Oday has been a great boat for our needs. We have only had it for 4 years but we have spent a lot of time onboard. We used it like a condo and went to the marina about every other weekend in the spring and fall (it’s too hot in July / Aug). The boat was not a project boat but it needed some TLC when we got it.
The Good
- The 34 is a racer / cruiser and its fun passing up these modern boats …. I’ve surprised a few. The boat was built in New England and likes a breeze and can take hard seas. Its a great boat for a couple to explore on, very forgiving and it has the basics for extended trips. Its not hard to find this boat listed as a live aboard or a island hopper.
- It has all the stock equipment for a 1981 - 2 huge ice chests, stove, pressurized water, nice v-berth with innovative door / head setup, deep quarter berth we used as a garage, and good HP out of the universal diesel to move along when needed.
- Extensive bottom work completed a little over a year ago by the Regent Boatyard - Full media blast to bare boat, the steal keel was taken down to metal and redone it is very smooth, multiple coats of barrier coat and anti-fouling. Over $4K (I did the boot-stripe and new name decal)
- Replaced all the opening ports with Beckson rain drain ports - one port was leaking badly so we had to dig out some of the material in the coach side and fill with epoxy. The 2 fixed side windows were also replaced due to a crack and crazing.
- Last summer we rebed the Genoa tracks (huge tracks - 50 bolts), all the hardware was removed, all of the holes routed out and filled with thickened epoxy, drilled new holes with tight tolerances and bed the tracks with butyl tape
- Good full batten Main with a great 110% Genoa currently up on the furler. It also has a 150% but it took a beating when I got the boat (tore up the cover which was just sail cloth), It still works but I don't think I’d spend $ to have it repaired. Because of the number of used racing sails available I purchased a furler sock so I could shop for something without a sail cover - just didn't get around to it.
- New smart battery charger added last fall
- New bilge pump and float installed this spring
- See Photo- I installed a window air A/C unit in the galley. I know it sounds strange but #1 you can’t see it without looking for it #2 it makes staying on the boat so much easier (shore power only) - It vents into the cockpit locker so I just open the locker to vent the warm air.
The boat still has some items I’d like to complete but I’ll let the next owner evaluate the importance. As I mentioned, this is not a project boat but you will have some things to do when the wind is light or the storms roll in.
My list ….
- One of the small aft lockers, often used for propane, broke fee and fell in. I’d plan to refit with a cockpit cooler. (it’s a pain going below all the time for something cold)
- Step the mast in about 2 years. I’ve not stepped the mast and I’d like to bed all of the rigging hardware like I did with the Genoa tracks.
- New Running rigging - I purchased all new Halyards( included) this spring. I oversized each of the halyards so I had enough to run them to the cockpit if that was on my list in the next year or so. Also handy when they are long for pulling things up out of the water like a raft or kayak like we do.
- Teak - The previous owner had real spar varnish on everything. It has taken all this time for it to break down but it’s almost ready to finish up. I planned to clean it this fall and put on 2 coats of Sekens which would make it look great and be a more practical.
- Wax the hull. I had it looking good 2 years ago but I just didn't have enough time last year to do it while it was on the hard. My plan was to do a quick haul and get it done.
To assist in ensuring we are on the same page I included the following generic terms.

After 14 days I’ll need to begin to charge storage fees ($10 per day) and proof of insurance will need to be supplied to the marina. I forgot to mention I'm available to show the boat but I may need some lead time during the work week.
