Serendipity (formerly Magic Dragon and Dutch Treat) is a 31' center cockpit, ketch rigged motorsailor with a pilot house designed by W.I.B Crealock and built by the Harstad Trawler Company in 1976. The Harstad Trawler Company was located in Santa Ana, California and we believe, manufactured 6of these sailboats before going out of business during an economic slump that put many boat manufacturers out of business in the late seventies. The Harstad motorsailor was considered quite "pricey" for it's timeand originally was given a list price of $32,000. However, the boat does provide ample accommodations for a 31' boat. Accommodations include a separate private aft cabin for two, along with a very comfortable V-berth forward of the head hanging closet, and main salon with galley.
This vessel is believed to be hull #2, and was originally purchased from Sail Boat Sales in Toledo, Ohio on September 26th, 1976 for $24,577. I have the original sales receipts along with a great deal of history from other owners along the way. To our best account we are the 4th owners of this boat, and we purchased this boat in late 2006. Since then my wife and I have made many fond memories in this boat and had many fun weekends with our two young boys.
About the design
This is probably the largest trailerable sailboat you'll ever find. With that being said I don't have a trailer for it, but I have seen some other owners of this model of boat online that have trailers built for them, and the dimensions seem to support that claim.
When you look at this design and compare it to the Cabo Rico designs W.I.B. Crealock is known for you'll see many similarities. Crealocks designs are very unique and standout in any marina around the world. I have received numerous compliments over the years regarding the design and styling of this boat.
The main salon is very spacious for a 31' boat. Thanks to the pilot house, theheadroom is more than ample for me and I'm 6'-3" and I've never had to duck or worry about hitting my head. I would guess thecenter height is roughly at least 6'6". The pilothouse also provide views due to the large windows. The main settee on the port side is 6+ feet in length and plus out into an additional double berth. On the starboard side is the galley and smaller settee. The galley includes a microwave oven, electric cook top, double bowl sink, and large ice box.
Moving forward is the head on the port side. The head includes a sink with a diverter for the shower head, as well as a manual pump head. I replaced the head with a new one a few years ago. The pilothouse extends beyond the head, so once again headroom is not an issue. Opposite the head is a hanging locker that goes from the floor to ceiling.
Moving forward of the head we are at the forward V-berth. The V-berth has a removable cushion which allows the V-berth to be converted from a v to a triangle which is great when you have a friend staying with you or your significant other. The width of the top of the v is about the same as a king size bed, which is the size of bedding we have used here. We had all of the cushions reupholstered in 2007 and we have never had any comfort issues when sleeping on them. Below the V-berth is the fresh water tank and the holding tank. The fresh water tank is 46 gallons and the holding tank is 10 gallons which gives you plenty of tankage for every long weekend with the entire family.
Aft of the salon is the cockpit. The cockpit comfortably can seat 6 adults and between the freeboard and the cockpit seat depth even non boaters feel safe regardless of weather conditions. Several years ago we added a bimini top from West Marine. The frame is still there but last season the fabric was damaged during a storm and we haven't replaced it yet. In 2007, weaddednew electronics from Raymarine and mounted them in a Navpod justforward of the wheel. The electronics package includes a wheel autopilot, water speed, depth, wind speed, and GPSchart plotter. All the lines are lead back to the cockpit so the boat can be comfortably sailed from the cockpit, and mostly from the wheel.
Below the cockpit is the engine room. The engine is a two cylinder 22hp Yanmar diesel model 2QM20H. The marina mechanic told me this is one of the most reliable diesel engines ever made. "Just change the oil regularly and keep the diesel clean and fresh and you'll never have issues" I don't want to jinx it, but so far I have never had any issues with it. I change the oil at the beginning of the season, check the impeller, and so far it has always started right up every spring. In the fall I add SeaFoam to the diesel and run antifreeze through the engine. I also plumbed in hose fittings to make winterizing the engine simple and almost effortless. coupled to the engine is a 3 blade bronze propeller that is 17x13 and will proper the boat up to 8 knots on a calm day. So even on a windless day your family and friends can still get out and enjoy the day.
Just aft of the cockpit is the separate entrance to the aft cabin. This cabin has two large single berths, with lots of storage under them. The headroom isn't 6-6 like that salon, but I find it comfortable to be a very comfortable height.
I purchased a refurbished Xantrex Freedom SW 3012 3000W inverter/chargerat the end of last season but I have not had a chance to install it or the remote control unit. I also have a new automatic charging relay and new battery boxes which need to be installed. This was to replace the older Freedom 2500W inverter/charger that failed and was no longer serviced by Xantex. As far as the charging system goes, I also upgrade the alternator to a high output model from Hamilton Ferris which is 125A. While some may say an inverter like this is overkill for a 31' sail boat, it certainly makes family life more enjoyable while you're anchored out. You can run the microwave, cooktop, and even the air conditioner. If it is only a few minutes you don't even need to fire up the engine, but if you are cooking dinner or the kids are sleeping below on your way back to the marina you can fire up the air conditioning and they can sleep in comfort even when it's 100+ degrees outside.
Some other notable upgrades I've made over the time I've owned Serendipity include adding a GSM based alarm system which is connected to a separate high water bilge switch and separate backup bilge pump. Since I live nearly 2 hours from the marina it makes it hard to go and check on this after a bad storm. So if by some chance something happens the alarm goes off and sends a text to your phone. I never had it go off except during testing, but it certainly gave us piece of mind that all was well.
One other notable upgrades and features I've added include new wiring in 2007, new navigational lights in 2007, I doubled the battery capacity to 4 deep cycles in 2013, new hot water tank in 2007. In 2011 we finally addressed the fading and worn through gelcoat and applied two part polyurethane paint to the hull and top sides. This made an incredible improvement to the appearance of the boat. The hull still looks great but could use a light buff this season. The topsides could use another coat soon. I would callthe topside paint fair condition right now. We needed to apply another coat in 2011 but we ran out of time in the spring, and then we had had our first son, then two years later our second son, and time just keeps getting away from us and we don't seem to have time to finish these projects in the spring.
Also included is a 2007 11' Saturn inflatable dingy which I purchased new. We have only used this a few times in the past 10 years so it is still in almost new condition and has no holes or patches. It has spent most of it's life in the storage bag except for maybe 4 weeks of actual use. When not in use we would store it in the bag to reduce any damage from the sun.
Also includedare all the basic safety and operational items so you can getout there and have some fun (life jackets, throwable devices, shore power cords, Magma grill, etc).
We hate to sell it but like I mentioned above we have two young boys and live two hours away from the marina so finding time to finish this restoration project, raise a family, and work is becoming difficult for us.
Just to be clear this is it is still a project boat, meaning these is still work to be done to restore it back tolike new condition. However, while it is a project, you can still get out there and use it during the summer like we have done. We work on it is the spring, and use it during the summer. There are still plenty of things that need done. Some of which include there is some fiberglass work which need done on the keel. This is not a structural repair, just the fiberglass coating over the cast iron keel. The topsides can use another coat of paint. The large port lights in the main salon need some work if you want to make them open a previous owner silicone them shut. I'm assuming this was because they were leaking. The carpet needs replaced. The interior could use another coat of paint, and there are some wooden trim pieces missing. Last year during a storm the main sail got a small tear near the foot. I was told it is repairable, but I haven't had a chance to take it anywhere yet. The top pulley on the roller furling probably needs replaced this season. At the end of last season the jib was difficult to remove as the line was getting stuck and felt like the line was getting caught in the plastic guide. The charger and inverter need to be installed. I removed the old wooden dingy davits because they were rotting. I have not made new ones yet, but I did replace the old metal mounting brackets with new aluminum ones. I also removed the old wooden grab rails which were rotting, and have not replaced them yet. None of these are large, difficult, or particularly expensive tasks to complete, they are just difficult for me to find time to finish them,. I forget a tool or materials at home (2 hours away) and can't finish it until the next trip, so projects seem to drag on longer than they should.
I have the title in hand for both boats, so the transfer should be quick and painless for both parties.
I've tried my best to accurately describe this boat. If you have additional questions please contact me. If desired I will be willing to meet you at the marina for a tour prior to bidding.
An immediate down payment via Paypal is required upon winning the auction. After the auction, I will make myself available to meet the high bidders, or their agent to receive the remaining payment amount and transfer ownership. Buyer is responsible for all taxes and other related registration andtitle fees. I will only accept final payment in the form of cash or certified check provided I come with you to the bank and witness you getting it. If you must pay with a personal check I'll wait to transfer ownership until the check has cleared. If you prefer to use an escrow service, I'm ok with that as well, but you'll need to also cover the costs of said service.
