Description

Offered for your consideration is a 1979 Hans Christian 38T Cutter. I recently purchased her from a long-time owner of approximately 25 years. He was no longer able to keep up with her and as such, she had some deferred maintenance and cosmetic needs many of which I have addressed. I spent a full day sailing her home last Autumn without incident and have been sprucing up over the Winter and especially the last few weeks as I get her ready to resell.

The diesel engine is a 49 horsepower Yanmar which was installed new in 2001. It currently has approximately 750 hours on it and starts, runs, and shifts gears beautifully. The boat’s batteries are new. The shaft and prop were replaced at the time the engine was installed and the boat is equipped with a dripless shaft seal and shaft break. Many hoses and electrical connections have been upgraded with top quality replacements throughout the boat. The bilge is clean. Through hull fittings and valves are heavy bronze.

The hull is heavily built of solid fiberglass. There are no soft spots on the decks anywhere. The cabin top does have some hairline gelcoat cracking in a number of areas, but this is cosmetic and superficial only. The mast step is solid and shows no stress cracking. The mast is corrosion free. The teak decks are intact and still look pretty good but will need attention in upcoming years. A number of areas could use new black polysulfide caulking as it is coming up after cleaning and scrubbing. This boat has solid fiberglass decks under the teak, so there is no leakage through the seams. The cockpit has a few teak planks that are cracked and should be replaced. Additionally, some of the seams should be remade with new polysulfide caulking.

The hull sides and boot stripe have just been repainted with Interlux Brightside epoxy paint. The boat’s old name has been removed before repainting. I addressed any nicks, chips, and heavy scratches with a fairing compound before painting. The hull is not perfect but looks beautiful from 5 feet away. All the non-skid on the topsides have been taped off and repainted with Interlux sand colored non-skid paint and looks great. The bottom has fresh ablative bottom paint and is ready for the water. Topside cap rails, grabrails, and trim is all in excellent condition as are the bow and stern teak pulpits. The bow pulpit has a broken plank flanking the sprit. This is an easy repair with a couple of screws and a new plank. The bowsprit is painted teak and will require a new coat of white paint. There is a Lofrens $4,000 windlass on the bow and two anchors with rodes and line. The main anchor is a CQR. The forward hatch is huge at 30 inches square and made heavily of solid teak. It has just been refinished with fresh varnish and a brand new ½ inch thick smoked plexy-glass insert. See photo attached. Likewise, the dorade skylight has been refinished with fresh varnish and new plex-glass inserts. The skylights are protected with stainless steel bars and look beautiful.

The heavy wire strand standing rigging appears to be upgraded and in excellent condition. See photos. The chain plates and mounting hardware are stainless and show no signs of rusting or leakage. This boat has a newer Furlex Roller furling jib which functions perfectly. There are three sails which convey with the boat. The furling yankee, a staysail, and the mainsail are all dyed dacron that take on the look of traditional tanbark. They have been to the sailmaker for repairs at the beginning of this season and, although older, they are in good serviceable condition. Winches are all Barlow Bronze and appear in excellent un-worn condition. All are in good working order. Hardware is predominantly bronze or heavy duty original blocks with teak faces. The traveler and Boom Gallows are beefy heavy bronze castings. The main traveler is equipped with Harken 6:1 ratio blocks.

This Hans Christian benefits from newer electronics including Raytheon Radar and two Garmin GPS chart plotters. One is a 5-inch display and the newer one has a 7- inch screen. It worked flawlessly on my trip home. The radar powers up but is not functioning. I have noticed several sketchy electrical connections at the base of the mast at the cabin sole and suspect that one of these has been compromised or not correctly wired the last time the mast was removed. I am optimistic that this is repairable, but for now, assume that radar is not working. There is a working VHF radio (don’t remember the brand) and a working stereo system in the cabin. Lighting has all been upgraded to LED with newer fixtures throughout.

The interior mahogany finish is very nice but does show some nicks and wear in a number of areas. I prefer to call this “Patina”. One drawer front has a ½ inch broken top lip. It’s not really noticeable and can be repaired easily. The paneling is all very nice and the overhead is extremely nice. The teak and holly cabin sole is in very good condition, but does show signs of wear and tear. I have been moving about the boat while working and have not yet tried cleaning and polishing the deck. Expect it to shine nicely. Most of the bilge areas are accessible via removeable cabin sole panels.

The quarter-berth cushions both port and starboard are newer Sunbrella Navy and show very well. All remaining cushions throughout the boat are newly upholstered in a tasteful navy-blue print fabric. All of the matching cushions include the vee berth, starboard side sofa, and wrap around settee. The settee seating has plenty of room for 8 around the table. All cushions are completed at this time with the exception of the settee which will be done this week. Hence, the missing cushions from the photos. There are some older photos showing the maroon cushions. All are replaced with the new blue print fabric.

The potty has been removed, cleaned, rebuilt, and remounted onto a new melamine mounting board trimmed in teak as original. It is in excellent condition, works well, and looks like-new. The head is fitted with a genuine granite counter top. The cabinet and paneling are very nice. It was originally fitted with a shower faucet, but it has since been removed. The sink faucet is original high-quality bronze. The teak and holly deck inside the head is solid and fully intact, but has heavy varnish on it and should be refinished to restore its original look.

The galley has an in-counter refrigerated space with working refrigeration. There is a dated gold colored gimballed propane stove/oven. It appears in excellent condition with no rust or damage. It was not tested as the installed aluminum propane tank is empty. I thought if I were to keep the boat, of painting it with an appliance spray paint to give it an updated look. There is also an installed working microwave oven. The pressurized domestic water system is working. I have not tested the water heater and don’t know if it’s working. There are three bilge pumps one may not be working.

Exterior canvas includes mainsail and staysail covers, as well as a forward hatch cover. All canvas is in very good- excellent condition. There is no dodger or bimini top.

She remains out of the water at this time for a new owner to have the hull and bottom surveyed before launching. The marina she is at now is safe and reasonably priced for slip rental if required until you have the opportunity to move her closer to home. Spring launching has already been paid for, so other than the cost of survey if you choose, the boat is turn-key and ready to go.

In true eBay auction fashion, the bidding on this boat will begin at $1.00 and it will sell to the highest bidder with no reserve. This is an opportunity to purchase a wonderful and extremely solid blue water cruiser for a very reasonable amount of money. These older Han Christians are highly sought after and have a loyal following. I am hedging my bets that the bidding will be spirited and competitive letting this boat sale achieve a fair value. Based upon research and recent sales, my opinion of fair market value for this boat in this condition, is $70 thousand. Please do your homework and see the prices Hans Christian Yachts command. I have tried to disclose everything about this boat that I have seen. Please read my seller feedback and bid with confidence. I encourage you to come see it before bidding but understand that isn’t always possible. If you win the bidding and don’t want the boat after seeing it, your deposit will be refunded promptly and there will be no hard feelings. It is my intention to sell this boat to a happy and satisfied customer. This is truly a special boat. I have no doubt that she will bring many more years of joy to a new owner who will continue to update and maintain her.

I can’t think of anything else at this time. If you have any general questions common to all Hans Christian 38s, please consult an online source, as I am not sure about specs and don’t want to provide incorrect information. For any specific questions regarding this boat, feel free to ask away. I will do my best to answer. Additionally, eBay permits only a limited number of photos. I have many many more than are posted and may forward to you as requested. My name is Rich and I can be reached at 860-662-9109. Thank you for your interest and good luck bidding.

On Apr-25-18 at 17:11:39 PDT, seller added the following information:

Ladies and Gentlemen, please do not bid on this boat if you really have no means of paying for it. I see that someone had placed a large bid today and then cancelled it soon after.
Several interested people have contacted me that they remember this boat being listed on eBay in November at the tail end of last season. An insincere bidder won the boat and had no intention of ever buying it. The buyer eventually responded and I received an apology and admission that they placed bids not realizing they could actually win. That cost me valuable time resulting in delaying the sale until now.
This is a large purchase. Please make sure that your finances arein order before bidding and your significant other is on board with this decision. Please do not bid unless your are ready, willing, and able to purchase. Please also keep in mind that the high bid is the purchase price. This is not negotiable after you win. Thank you.
